Brady Homes Builds NAHB Green House to Appear on "Extreme Makeover" |
Fans of ABC's hit show "Extreme Makeover" have no doubt often been moved to the verge of tears upon witnessing the effort, compassion, and heartfelt sincerity that the house builders on each show put into that episode's project. In an upcoming episode tentatively scheduled to air in late October, the compassion and charity exhibited towards the home future occupants will be further extended to include the environment as well. Bloomington, Illinois based Brady Homes, along with student volunteers from Illinois Wesleyan University, have designed and built the first green, energy efficient home to be featured on the show. The 2,800 sq. ft. house was designed for a family of six and built according to NAHB Green Certification guidelines. In an Urban-Champaign News Gazette article, Ed Brady, President of Brady Homes, said, "We thought this would be a great opportunity to build a green home and build awareness about the (certification) program." Brady Homes has built the majority of their homes to conform to Energy Star standards, but the home built for "Extreme Makeover" is Brady Homes' first NAHB Green standard home. The NAHB standard details the "green" practices that builders can incorporate into new homes, home remodeling and additions, high-rise multifamily buildings, hotels and motels, and "green" sites. The "National Green Building Standard" has been published by NAHB/ICC and can be purchased on http://www.constructionbook.com, a company that has been providing builders, designers and construction professionals with the products they need since 1998. Green practices found in the publication include preparation and development; resource, energy, and water efficiency; indoor environmental quality; building owner education; and operation, maintenance, and building owner education. The house built by Brady Homes has earned a Silver rating. The "National Green Building Standard" details the four stages of "green" building (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Emerald), ranging from basic, entry-level green building to the highest level of sustainable "green" building that incorporates an energy savings of 65 percent or higher. |
